Before & After: My Kitchen

After...

I thought I'd share a project of mine with you...our kitchen renovation at Beech House.  We transformed the rather fussy sitting room (below) in to a family friendly kitchen/diner (above).

Here is me making notes before we moved in!

We decluttered the fireplace and added a log burning stove, along with hanging my favourite wall plaque which is available to buy at Butterfly Lane.

Before
We kept the colour palette simple by using cool greys and Farrow & Ball's Wimborne White on the walls.

All we need now is the perfect dining table to fill this space...

Loving This Week...

Hello Butterfly Lane readers.  I have been away for quite a while, so I'm sorry if you've missed our updates!  But, I'm back, and get ready for daily updates from Butterfly Lane!

I thought I'd ease ourselves back in to bloggersphere by showcasing a few of my favourite images that I've stumbled across this week...

A stylish kitchen...

I'm busy decorating my little one's nursery at the moment, and scouring images for inspiration.  This room (pictured below) isn't for baby, but I love this look for a few years down the line.

I'm translating grown up elements in to my nursery at the moment, chandeliers, glass mirrors and a velvet chair and I think this has the same principles...a child's room that still fits (and flows) with your home's style.

Modern glamour...you've got to love it!

Summer time is here and it gets me thinking about al fresco dining...I could sit in the space forever!

Our autumn collections have started to arrive and this clock is one of my favourites.  So much so that it hangs with pride at Butterfly Lane HQ.

£60, buy here.

Another kitchen, another style.  I love the grey, I love the drinks chiller and I love the multi leveled island.

Inspiration For Monday

Mondays, lets face it, can be tedious.  So I thought I would document a few images that have inspired me for the week ahead.  From chic and simple kitchens to spectacular studies, I am eager to create something beautiful this week.  How about you?

This French Grey kitchen is so simple.  I love the use of leather pouffe style seating instead of  conventional high stools.

Bright, airy and those lights...need I say more?

A classic bedroom, and I love the chunky bedside tables.

Wow, wow, wow, I want this study please!

This is a tad u-turn in design style for Butterfly Lane, but I have a massive penchant to this style furniture at the moment - give me an Ercol inspired leg and I'm happy!

Summer in a room!

I just love dark furniture with light fabrics, striking yet incredibly simple.

This dark taupe room inspired me to splash the same colour on one of my bedroom walls over the Easter break.  Against tall white glossy skirting and light fabrics it looks super chic...even if I say so myself!

All I need to say is that I want this kitchen...now!

What's inspiring you this week?

Love Light - Part One, The Ceiling Light

I can't stress the importance of a good lighting scheme enough.  It can create the right ambience in a room, and so many different looks.  Cosy, romantic, party, cheerful to name just a few.  Now I'm going to start my mini series of lighting blogs with my utmost favourite, the ceiling light...with lamps coming in a close second.

I have made no secret in the past about my love affair with a chandelier - in any room from the bathroom, kitchen or cloakroom!  They give an elegance and glamour that is necessary in any room design in my opinion.  As long as you keep the rest of the room simple, otherwise you can create a very fussy look that is not typically Butterfly Lane.

The interior is simple in the rooms below and the fabulous light features really create a stand out room with an amazing focal point.

Plain and simple dressing room with a fabulous light feature

As I have already said, I think chandeliers can work well in any room and below, I have found a collection of images where a chandelier looks just fabulous in a kitchen!

Myself and the boyfriend are currently designing our kitchen and we are carefully deigning our lighting concept with the electrician.  From lighting inside the cabinets, within shelves and surrounding the Aga, we want to create a multi functional scheme that will give our kitchen different 'vibes' on different occasions.  We have decided on a triple threat over the dining table, three beautiful lights hanging independently.  My inspirational images are below...

Stay tuned for more lighting blogs in the coming weeks...

Kitchen Love

I admit it; I am a ‘wannabe’ domestic goddess!  I love nothing more than hosting guests in my home, pouring drinks, laying out nibbles, and making everywhere look pretty.  This is why the kitchen is such an important room in my home, like it is for many other like-minded, homely folk.

The kitchen is definitely the hub of our home, the domestic centre, the place where we entertain guests, socialise, eat, drink and be merry.  It’s the room in my home that is always buzzing with life and energy.  Cooking, laughing, eating and drinking, it is by far the most used of my rooms.  Well I say ‘cooking’, I have only just learnt how to whip up a successful meal on my Aga.  It no longer fills me with total dread come dinnertime!  In fact I have become somewhat fond of the old thing, and they do make a stunning feature after all.

As you know by now I am currently renovating my Georgian home in the English countryside and in my opinion I am on my most exciting part of the renovation so far, the overhaul of the kitchen!  We have dreams of creating a fabulous farmhouse, yet elegant style kitchen.    I particularly love the two-tone options at the moment, with cream cabinets and a light grey island.  Muted, calm and subtly elegant, perfection!

I have recently been spotting many a kitchen without the standard tile splash back and instead have a beautiful flush piece of marble, I really love this idea, it looks so chic.  Here are some images that are fuelling my kitchen inspiration at the moment…

Here at Butterfly Lane we are completely in love with this pantry, it is so chic and coordinated!  A larder or pantry is such a great idea to store and organise your kitchen essentials, and one like this is simply to die for…

Beautiful and Organised Pantry
Sparkling glassware is a pre-requisite in any room in my opinion, and no less in the kitchen.  These incredible glass pineapples (very on trend at the moment) are sure to give your kitchen the wow factor.

I love glass jars to fill with pasta, seeds and nuts, they make such a gorgeous feature for your worktop or dresser and Butterfly Lane has a large variety available on the up and coming online boutique.  We have just taken delivery of these amazing ‘Stackers’, you can fill them with anything you like, tea and coffee, chocolates, the options are endless!  They were definitely a ‘one for me, one for Butterfly Lane’ moment when the delivery arrived!

I love dining rooms, however the formality can sometimes be off putting, as it’s usually a room that you use on special occasions a handful of times a year, to me this is such a waste of space.  Therefore, I like the idea of creating a kitchen come dining room in my home, however I still want it to have the elegant edge that a formal dining room exudes.  How do you do this, I hear you ask?  Well this can be done by filling the dining area of the kitchen with less ‘kitchen like’ accessories, and by dressing the table in a more formal manner.  Also lighting is very important, I like to incorporate lamps in to rooms to give a more subtle, relaxed lighting scheme, and a sparkling chandelier can look fabulous hanging over the table to give it that decadent, elegant feel.

Platters at the Ready

As we approach the Spring (we are in March after all) my mind has started to wander on to the summery dresses, floaty blouses and floral trousers that are filling our shops online, and otherwise, as I type away.  So I have decided to step away from the winter stodge fest that I have been consuming night after night...after night, for as long as I can remember.  My 'it's so cold outside, I deserve something cakey, something indulgent' mentality is behind me!  In order to get body ready for summer time dressing I have whipped up a tried and tested healthy dinner that is super easy and delicious at the same time.  The recipe is also ideal if you're entertaining a group of friends, it's definitely a crowd pleaser.

Recipe Idea:  Italian Baked Sea Bass:

BBC Good Food

Ingredients:
  • About 290g jar whole roasted peppers, drained and sliced
  • 1 red onions, sliced in to thin wedges
  • drizzle of olive oil
  • 4 garlic gloves, unpeeled
  • 3 fat slices of lemons (the rest cut in to wedges to serve)
  • 2 sea bass
  • 15 black olives
  • 25g toasted pine nuts
  • handful of roughly chopped parsley
Method:

1.  Heat oven to 200C/180C, fan/gas 6.   Toss the peppers and onions with seasoning plus a small drizzle of olive oil.  Spread on a baking tray and cook for 5 minutes

2.  Toss in the lemon and garlic with the onions and peppers.  Sit on the sea bass, brush fish with a little more oil, season the fish and roast for 15 minutes

3.  Stir the olives and pine nuts in to the veg and roast for 5 minutes more until the fish is just cooked through.  Squeeze over some lemon juice and scatter with parsley to serve.

Finally, accompany with a summery salad and voila, dinner is served!

I adore cooking and creating a feast for my family and friends, but I also love the opportunity of using all of my plates, platters, bowls and jugs that I have collected over the years.  I have something of a problem, who needs umpteenth platters?  Well, I do!  So here are Butterfly Lane's top three designs to get you through a successful dinner party with ease and elegance.

The White Company always have an amazing and simple selection, and this one is particularly lovely.

Astier de Vilatte have a stunning selection, they have a larger price tag but are so timeless.

This Colbert Long Platter is elegant and simply exquisite.  It would make a wonderful table centre piece for any occasion.
