Loving This Week...

Hello Butterfly Lane readers.  I have been away for quite a while, so I'm sorry if you've missed our updates!  But, I'm back, and get ready for daily updates from Butterfly Lane!

I thought I'd ease ourselves back in to bloggersphere by showcasing a few of my favourite images that I've stumbled across this week...

A stylish kitchen...

I'm busy decorating my little one's nursery at the moment, and scouring images for inspiration.  This room (pictured below) isn't for baby, but I love this look for a few years down the line.

I'm translating grown up elements in to my nursery at the moment, chandeliers, glass mirrors and a velvet chair and I think this has the same principles...a child's room that still fits (and flows) with your home's style.

Modern glamour...you've got to love it!

Summer time is here and it gets me thinking about al fresco dining...I could sit in the space forever!

Our autumn collections have started to arrive and this clock is one of my favourites.  So much so that it hangs with pride at Butterfly Lane HQ.

£60, buy here.

Another kitchen, another style.  I love the grey, I love the drinks chiller and I love the multi leveled island.

What has inspired you this week?

Last of the Summer Soiree

So August bank holiday weekend is fast approaching, a weekend that symbolises, dare I say it...the end of summer!  So with this in mind I think we should embrace this extended weekend and enjoy some summertime living, even if the weather isn't up to scratch.  I'm thinking Pimms, sundresses and sombreros...erm, maybe we should leave the sombrero!

Anyway with this in mind here are some gorgeous outdoor spaces to inspire you to create a summertime oasis of your very own.

I just love fairy lights outside, they are festive, subtle and above all oh so elegant.  I have invested in some solar powered fairy lights this year that I have simply wrapped amongst the wall climbing plants and trees, so come nightfall they sparkle.

The Butterfly Lane al fresco collection is just so chic (even if we say it ourselves!).  It looks like your most treasured crystal but in fact it's acrylic!  This collection can also be used for inside soirees throughout the rest of the year.  I like to get cost per use out of my purchases, so I know I'll be using the stunning salad bowl time and time again.

View the full al fresco collection here
No party would be complete without the cocktail du jour, so here is a favourite at Butterfly Lane HQ, which was first discovered at The Booking Office at the St Pancras Renaissance.  I hope you enjoy it!

The Champagne Cobbler:

1 slice of orange
1 lemon wedge
1 fresh, skinless, pineapple wedge
3/4 oz Maraschino liqueur
4 oz Champagne

Muddle the fruit an Maraschino at the bottom of a bar glass.  Add ice and Champagne, stir gently and strain in to a Champagne flute.  Garnish with orange peel and serve.  Et voila!

Anyway, here's hoping for a beautiful September so we can extend our summertime fun a bit longer.

Remember to look at our new online boutique!  We hope you like it.

Maritime Fun - Add A Coastal Air To Your Home

I'm off to a not so sunny Salcombe in Devon on Friday for a mini break with my family.  We are all heading down in convoy, lots of adults, two under 5's and a crazy Westie called Maggie, who can't wait to play in the sea.

Salcombe is England's destination for the 'boaty' crowd, so I'm thinking that the sailing course I took when I was eleven might come in handy!  Although, I don't think that sailing will be a factor, instead, as per usual, I'm thinking about food and eating lots of fresh fish and super fresh oysters, and of course playing in the rock pools with my adorable nephews.  However, as Butterfly Lane has a distinctive coastal vibe at the moment, I've been looking in to lots of nautical looks to create the perfect beach house.  Or if you don't have a beach house, like the majority of us, I have found some gorgeous maritime accessories to add elements of summer, beachy fun in to your home.

Nautical chic with classic navy and white combination

Now, I admit it, I am keen on a maritime look or two, not only for homeware but also in fashion too.  Who says you need to own a yacht to dress nautical!  I until recently worked for Sir Paul Smith HQ and was often ridiculed by colleagues about my 'admirals' outfits (as they fondly called them), that appeared in late spring, year in, year out.  However, I think navy and white, especially in a stripe, is such a clean, crisp and timeless combination for summer time dressing and living, and don't forget to throw in the odd anchor emblem for good measure!  Every year the catwalk collections showcase some variation on the trend, which reiterates my point of its timeless charm.

YSL showing nautical chic
Back to interiors...

The classic blue and white colour combination screams nautical, and looks so clean and fresh.  Adding elements of this style in to your home is easy, and it works best with a neutral backdrop, especially with white walls and furniture, then adding accents of blue.  The blue panelling on the walls below, breaks up the crisp whiteness and adds warmth.

Alternatively, smaller statements can be just as effective.  Keep the decor white and add design features such as white washed furniture, lanterns and a navy and white striped rug or throw.

Helen Turkington 'Life's A Beach' Image

For an all out nautical look I couldn't resist including this image of a bedroom for lots of guests.  It is so fun and so perfect for any beach retreat.

I have fallen in love with these gorgeous tasselled cushions by The White Company.  They are perfect for inside or outside.  Also, this wooden white deck chair is so stunning for your outside space, whether it's on the beach or not!  And remember lanterns give a great coastal vibe and are so versatile, use on your dining/kitchen table as a feature, on a side board or outside in your garden.  I recommend that you invest!

I hope you are inspired for some maritime fun...

Gelsomina's Cucina: Gorgeous Elderflower - Champagne, Cordial and Panna Cotta

We would like to thank the lovely Diana for this Butterfly Lane guest blog.  If you love the sound of elderflower champagne, cordial and panna cotta as much as we do, I suggest you read on...

Hi, My name is Diana and I write a blog called 'Gelsomina's Cucina',  and I have been very kindly asked to write a guest post for Butterfly Lane. My greatest love in life is to bake and to feed my gorgeous family, eating together is a massive part of our daily life and is something we feel passionately about.

With the recent warm weather, my thoughts as always when the sun shine's, is to spend as much time outside as possible and this includes eating! There is nothing better than balmy hot summer's evening sat outside until late in the evening sharing good food and great company.

I spend a lot of time preparing the food we eat and I like to give just as much thought to where we are going to eat it, we always lay the table and in the Summer I love nothing more than coming up with beautiful table settings. I love to use flowers from our garden or even better, wild flowers in rustic jugs, set with pretty table linen, dainty glasses and delicate pastel china, you just can't help but want to while away the evening at the table.

We also love to entertain, creating a beautiful setting outside for our guests as well as the perfect Summer menu is a must.

I like to make everything from scratch, this includes everything from the bread, to the dessert, to the drinks we have and this time of the year provides me with one of my favourites ingredients, it's free, all over our lovely countryside and all you have to do is go on a little forage for it, which is all part of the fun.

I am of course talking about Elderflower's! I make my own cordial, champagne and even panna cotta with this beautifully scented flower, elderflower for me sum's up the taste of summer.

So here are my three favourite recipes:-

Elderflower Cordial

20 heads of elderflower
1.8 kg granulated sugar, or caster sugar
1.2 litres water
2 unwaxed lemons
75g citric acid

Shake the Elderflowers to expel any lingering insects, and then place in a large bowl.

Put the sugar into a pan with the water and bring up to the boil, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.

While the sugar syrup is heating, pare the zest of the lemons off in wide strips and toss into the bowl with the Elderflowers. Slice the lemons, discard the ends, and add the slices to the bowl. Pour over the boiling syrup, and then stir in the citric acid. Cover with a cloth and then leave at room temperature for 24 hours.

Next day, strain the cordial through a sieve lined with muslin (or a new j-cloth rinsed out in boiling water), and pour into thoroughly cleaned glass or plastic bottles. Screw on the lids and pop into the cupboard ready to use.

To serve Elderflower Cordial: Dilute the elderflower cordial to taste with fizzy water, and serve over ice with a slice or two of lemon, or a sprig of mint floating on top.

For something a touch more sprightly, add a shot of gin or vodka and a lemon slice, or add it to white wine and sparkling water to make an elderflower spritzer.

Elderflower cordial is also brilliant in recipes such as gooseberry fool, and in vinaigrette - mix with wine vinegar, a touch of mustard, salt, pepper and a light olive oil (surprisingly good with a courgette, lettuce and broad bean salad). You might even try adding it to a marinade for chicken breasts. Try it in sorbets, or ice-creams, or just spooned over scoops of vanilla ice-cream, or use it to sweeten and flavour the fruit for a crumble.

Elderflower Panna Cotta

Serves 6

3 sheets of gelatine
2oz caster sugar
100ml elderflower cordial
300ml double cream
300ml milk

Heat the milk and cream through gently but don't let boil.

Add the sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Soak the gelatine in warm water for a few minutes.

Take the cream mixture off the heat and stir in the gelatine until it has completely melted. Add the elderflower cordial, stir and pour into six ramekins or moulds. Place in the fridge to set for a 3-4hrs it can easily be over night if you want to get ahead.

To release from the moulds dip them into warm water for a few seconds or run a pallet knife around the edge. Serve with soft fruit. Gooseberries are a great with elderflower.

Elderflower Champagne

4 litres hot water
700g sugar
Juice and zest of four lemons
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
About 15 elderflower heads, in full bloom
A pinch of dried yeast (you may not need this)

Put the hot water and sugar into a large container (a spotlessly clean bucket is good) and stir until the sugar dissolves, then top up with cold water so you have 6 litres of liquid in total.

Add the lemon juice and zest, the vinegar and the flower heads and stir gently.

Cover with clean muslin and leave to ferment in a cool, airy place for a couple of days. Take a look at the brew at this point, and if it's not becoming a little foamy and obviously beginning to ferment, add a pinch of yeast. (I checked mine as the recipe suggests & no bubbles, I added the yeast and within a couple of days there were bubbles, loads of them)

Leave the mixture to ferment, again covered with muslin, for a further four days. Strain the liquid through a sieve lined with muslin and decant into sterilised strong glass bottles with champagne stoppers (available from home-brewing suppliers) or Grolsch-style stoppers, or sterilized screw-top plastic bottles (a good deal of pressure can build up inside as the fermenting brew produces carbon dioxide, so strong bottles and seals are essential). I saved Sparkling Water bottles as I knew they could withstand the pressure and I am so pleased that I did, the Champagne is so bubbly that you have to be very carefully opening it, letting out a little pressure at a time, or else you will have Champagne everywhere!

Seal and leave to ferment in the bottles for at least a week before serving, chilled. The champagne should keep in the bottles for several months. Store in a cool, dry place.

Tip: I am going to keep mine stored in the garage in the plastic bottles and decant into prettier bottles to serve or to give as gifts as required.

So here's to a long hot summer, lots of Al Fresco dinning and many happy memories.

Summer Heat

Well, rather disappointingly the weather has turned to the chilly (and wet) side here in England.  One minute it is glorious sunshine and the next minute the Aga is on full blast for some well needed heat!  It is indeed Flaming June so I am not going to be discouraged from elements of blissful summer time living, and that is why I am completely inspired by these amazing outside fireplaces.

What could be more beautiful than sitting in your gorgeous, but chilly, garden with a roaring fire blazing.

I'm telling you fires are not just for winter, they are a well needed component of your garden design, especially with the unpredictable British climate.

Just imagine, a cocktail in hand, tapas on the table, a cashmere throw on knee, accompanied by friends and family...all gathered around your outdoor fire.  Forget 'Glamping' (aka Glamourous Camping),  this fabulous fire side attraction is so much more my cup of tea!
