The Mirror Affect

I'm a bit of a mirror junky, I love them in every room, in fact I have them in every room in my home, even my kitchen!  Now this addiction is not at all in a vain sense, but instead, in a styling sense.

The main pro's of popping a mirror on the wall are:

1.  They make the space look bigger

2.  You can buy so many fabulous styles, so they are more like a thing of beauty than a functional accessory.

Here are a few of my favourite ways to accessorise a room with mirrors.

A fabulous triple mirror threat in this bathroom...

A mirrored wall in this bathroom crates the illusion of ample space and reflects the light.

I love, love, love mirrored furniture and this piece is gorgeous...

No dressing table would be complete without a mirror.  This one is so elegant.

This simple shaped mirror creates the feeling of space.

This mirrored bed is just fabulous!

Love Light - Part One, The Ceiling Light

I can't stress the importance of a good lighting scheme enough.  It can create the right ambience in a room, and so many different looks.  Cosy, romantic, party, cheerful to name just a few.  Now I'm going to start my mini series of lighting blogs with my utmost favourite, the ceiling light...with lamps coming in a close second.

I have made no secret in the past about my love affair with a chandelier - in any room from the bathroom, kitchen or cloakroom!  They give an elegance and glamour that is necessary in any room design in my opinion.  As long as you keep the rest of the room simple, otherwise you can create a very fussy look that is not typically Butterfly Lane.

The interior is simple in the rooms below and the fabulous light features really create a stand out room with an amazing focal point.

Plain and simple dressing room with a fabulous light feature

As I have already said, I think chandeliers can work well in any room and below, I have found a collection of images where a chandelier looks just fabulous in a kitchen!

Myself and the boyfriend are currently designing our kitchen and we are carefully deigning our lighting concept with the electrician.  From lighting inside the cabinets, within shelves and surrounding the Aga, we want to create a multi functional scheme that will give our kitchen different 'vibes' on different occasions.  We have decided on a triple threat over the dining table, three beautiful lights hanging independently.  My inspirational images are below...

Stay tuned for more lighting blogs in the coming weeks...

A Beautiful Bathroom

The bathroom might well be the most over looked room in the home, a place full of children’s bath time toys, cleaning products and laundry baskets.  Sound familiar?  Well, here at Butterfly Lane we want to make a change and turn this room a relaxing hub, a spa sanctuary and chic, oh so chic!

A bathroom renovation can sometimes render ideas of paneling, nautical blues and whites and an ornamental boat…maybe in a Devon holiday home, but we are thinking about something a little more sophisticated to spur our inspiration.

I love a freestanding bath and I am lucky enough to have two in my home, albeit standing in bathrooms that are crying out for an immediate redesign!  For some reason the previous owners of Beech House thought it would be cute to engrave hearts in every piece of paneling, a bit too kitsch for my liking, and I can’t wait to see the back of it….pick axe required please!

Lighting as always, is very important, especially when you need this room to be bright as bright can be for applying make-up and then relaxing as relaxing can be, to soak in a bubble bath and unwind.  Of course no Butterfly Lane redesign would be complete without a stunning central light feature, this one below is just gorgeous….

And the use of wall lights in the images below add a more relaxed lighting scheme….

And remember every relaxing bath requires an abundance of scented candles…bliss, and as a bonus they create a gorgeous light level too.

As the perfect finishing touch fill your bathroom with luxurious smellies, and the ones from Jo Malone are my go to choice.  From candles, bath oils and shower gels, the range is truly divine and the packaging looks extremely sophisticated perched on your bathroom cabinet.

Another finishing touch is an ornate chair, ideal for somewhere to throw your towels and clothes on…and of course to look pretty!

Hope this has inspired you to create your dream bathroom.  Let us know how you get on.
