The Mirror Affect

I'm a bit of a mirror junky, I love them in every room, in fact I have them in every room in my home, even my kitchen!  Now this addiction is not at all in a vain sense, but instead, in a styling sense. 

The main pro's of popping a mirror on the wall are:

1.  They make the space look bigger

2.  You can buy so many fabulous styles, so they are more like a thing of beauty than a functional accessory.

Here are a few of my favourite ways to accessorise a room with mirrors.

Colour: Duck Egg Blue

I'm loving the fresh feel of duck egg blue at the moment.  I am in the process of designing a bedroom with this relaxing and cool shade.  I'm teaming the plains walls with painted white furniture and multi-layer shades from the palette with the soft furnishings...and just a small hint of pale grey.  I have added my mood boards below for you to have a look at. 

I know this isn't a bedroom, but the below image was something that grabbed my 'duck egg' attention.  The shade works so well with pale greys too.  

I am also in love with the amazing light fitting, what a feature!

The Perfect Guest Room

You might have noticed that it has been a little quiet of late here on Butterfly Lane.  We are ridiculously busy putting the final touches on our online boutique that will be launching very very soon!  But I must admit I have been feeling lots of guilt about neglecting our little blog and I have missed it very much indeed.  Therefore, I thought I would say a quick hello and write a small blog...

The work continues at Beech House and we were lucky enough to have a house full of family last weekend to really crack on with the ever growing list of 'things to do' on the renovation project.  However, due to the lack of furniture at the moment, it was air mattresses all round and it got me thinking about creating the perfect guest rooms for our guests in the future.

I really want my home decor to flow easily from room to room so I will be, of course, focusing on a neutral base for these rooms.  Guest rooms have to be relaxing and simple, with everything that your visitors require.

I want the chicness and sophistication of a boutique hotel but with the homeliness of a country retreat.

Accessories wise, I love the idea of a small vase of water and two water glasses on the bedside table, towels perched at the end of the bed...but not as far as chocolates on the pillows!  Because, remember, you do want your guests to eventually leave, so don't make them too comfortable in their stylish surroundings!

Blissful Boudoirs

Your bedroom is definitely the most personal of rooms in a house, and a room that is often not seen by your guests, apart from your guest bedrooms of course!  In true Butterfly Lane style I think a muted colour palette works so well in a bedroom.

Life is so chaotic and you are exposed so much mental stimulation on a day-to-day basis.  If like myself you are logged on to social media, checking emails and attached to a laptop and iPhone all day long for work, and also for organising your social life, it is not surprising that increasing numbers of people are finding it harder and harder to have a good nights sleep.  I am trying my very best to switch off my laptop and mobile at 10pm and then focus on less stimulating things like catching up with reading magazines, something non-taxing.  But I also think it helps to have a beautifully chilled out boudoir that calms and relaxes and in which case guarantees a peaceful nights sleep.  After all it is your retreat at the end of the day, a cool and airy place in spring and summer and a cosy cocoon in autumn and winter.

The Bed

So obviously this room should include a bed!  This one is particularly special.

I love lots of cushions in differing styles, textures and tones as a stylish feature on a bed.  Something that men (well, let me re-phase that, men that I know), just simply do not understand.  But most women will agree that an array of cushions finish the room off perfectly.  Don't forget a throw, I love fabrics like velvet, cashmere and fur, the epitome of luxury.

Paris Fashion Week: Adore Dior

So Paris Fashion Week is here and the big players in the fashion world are out in force, from Lanvin to Isabel Marant and my absolute favourite of all the shows this season, Christian Dior.  Even though it was spiked with controversy and drama, after all it was only a year since Galliano’s scandal and only the second ready-to-wear show with Bill Gaytten at the helm.  Still rumors circulate about who is linked with the infamous Dior job, will it be Stefano Pilati who has just left Yves Saint Laurent or Raf Simons who has just showed his last Jil Sander collection, watch this space!  Anyway, it looks like Gaytten will be going nowhere fast, as he created a dream like, refined and sophisticated collection for this legendary brand.

Wow, the show was just incredible, with lovely, delicate and ballet feminine colours, with cinched waists and splaying, thickly-pleated skirts.  It was pared down and gentle but very polished at the same time.  With shades from mauve through to red wine, powder pink and subtle greys it was just stunning and here at Butterfly Lane we adore a muted colour palette, not only for whimsical dresses but for our homes too. 

Now if I was a Dior dress I would like to sit in a living room of soft and feminine sophistication.  With a pared down colour palette of mauve through to dusky pinks, with hints of pale grey.  Romantic and elegant…

 …and a bedroom full of luxurious fabrics and soft shades of pinks and greys.
