A Quick Glance at My Week

My weeks are beginning to fly by in a blur of painting, decorating, preparing for the arrival of our of little girl and dare I even say it...organising the Christmas collections at Butterfly Lane.

This week at Beech House we have had all the sash windows painted, a job that I have dreaded for months so we decided to hire a lovely man called Ned to finish them for us.  It really has given our house a lovely facelift and I am as pleased as punch.

These light and airy rooms are inspiring me at the moment...as are the beautiful hydrangeas in the picture below!

I cannot stop eating strawberries at the moment (maybe my little bun in the oven is clued up that Wimbledon has started!).  I am literally going through a punnet a day, so this salad is so summery and fresh.

Strawberries, Mango, Red Onion and Rocket

We are just finishing our Christmas Lookbook here at Butterfly Lane HQ and here is a very quick peek in to our new 'candlelight' collection...

I'm eying up these gorgeous patent Valentino Rockstuds as a my next indulgence.  The perfect addition to a pair of boyfriend jeans.

Work on the nursery continues and I can't stand the cuteness of this bag full of bunnies for one of the windowsills, I can't wait to see them all flopperly lined up.  Yes, you guessed it, the theme seems to be bunnies!

To top off my week, I've just had a message to let me know that my lovely friend has had a lovely little boy, congratulations!

Hope you've all had a fabulous week.

Loving This Week...

Hello Butterfly Lane readers.  I have been away for quite a while, so I'm sorry if you've missed our updates!  But, I'm back, and get ready for daily updates from Butterfly Lane!

I thought I'd ease ourselves back in to bloggersphere by showcasing a few of my favourite images that I've stumbled across this week...

A stylish kitchen...

I'm busy decorating my little one's nursery at the moment, and scouring images for inspiration.  This room (pictured below) isn't for baby, but I love this look for a few years down the line.

I'm translating grown up elements in to my nursery at the moment, chandeliers, glass mirrors and a velvet chair and I think this has the same principles...a child's room that still fits (and flows) with your home's style.

Modern glamour...you've got to love it!

Summer time is here and it gets me thinking about al fresco dining...I could sit in the space forever!

Our autumn collections have started to arrive and this clock is one of my favourites.  So much so that it hangs with pride at Butterfly Lane HQ.

£60, buy here.

Another kitchen, another style.  I love the grey, I love the drinks chiller and I love the multi leveled island.

What has inspired you this week?

Cool Kid's Rooms

Finding fun ways to decorate your children's bedrooms can be challenging especially if you want them to mirror the way your home flows which means not being cartoon inspired and in prime colours.

At Butterfly Lane we are beginning to expand our 'Little Butterflies' collection and have found some gorgeous accessories to create a room that your little one will love AND that you will feel has design kudos.   Win, win!

Well, we are all about a neutral colour scheme here at Butterfly Lane, and using a grey colour palette need not be cold and sterile but instead look chic and homely for your little one.

Here are some of our favourites...

Stripes, spots and zig-zags, we love this style for a baby through to a teenager!   The bull head on the wall is very cool indeed.

Pretty enough for a princess.  This style bedroom will mirror your home perfectly with the taupe walls, luxurious curtains, stylish artwork, chandelier, mirrored furniture...need I go on!

We love this star wallpaper and numbered cushions.  Perfect for a growing boy!

Grey and baby pink...what a stylish combination.

Blue stripy wallpaper and fun artwork creates a fabulous nursery.

Football fabric is perfect for a boys bedroom.

Butterfly Lane has discovered these amazing felt animal heads to hang on your little one's wall.  Use as a decoration or as a elaborate hook.  Available now for £65 each.  Which is your favourite?

Our new fabric and wallpaper collection is fun and so stylish.  Available in a multitude of colour ways too.  From cowboys to gymkhana to an enchanted wood print, you'll struggle to find anything more fabulous!  Shop the collection HERE.

A Perfect Space For Little One's

Children clearly change the dynamic of a home, not only in noise levels and the scattering of toys (they have so much stuff!), but also with the styling and organisation of your space.   I'm talking about storage!  It's obviously not possible to confine toys and general kiddy stuff to a playroom or bedroom, so in my most recent project I've been thinking about how to make a home family friendly, whilst still being stylish, elegant and organised.

I love this image to the left.  The stylish dining room still screams 'adult', but the little chairs and desk is an ideal space for colouring and craft time and an area for homework.  By using simple storage boxes for pens and papers the children's desk still has a grown up feel.  Love the chalkboard too for family lists!

The below image is so stylish, clean and simple, and is also a great space saver and storage area for your little ones vast amount of stuff.  I think every child would love a bedroom like this.  Who doesn't love a ladder right?

Don't get me wrong, I love an all out baby wonderland for a nursery.  I cannot get enough of soft cuddly toys, pastel shades and mobiles.  But these nursery's are so chic and understated, and I have fallen in love with them.  The grey and white in the below image is so subtle and calming.

Simple and elegant, this bunk bed filled room is just gorgeous!  The subtle taupes with the pale pinks is stunning.  The chandelier and porthole style mirrors give it a grown up charm.

The sugary tones in this room are beautiful against the white back drop.  The sparkling chandelier gives that grown up influence once again.

Children should have a stylish space too!

Baby Talk

A nursery is such a special and exciting room to design, but can often pose a design challenge for families as it is a step away from the norm as they are designing for a baby and not themselves.  While indeed this space is a child’s bedroom, it is important to remember that a nursery is a place where new mummy’s and daddy’s look after their new arrival.  The little bundle of joy won’t be exploring the room for quite some time so it needs to be as parent friendly as possible.

Here are Butterfly Lane’s top tips for an elegant, relaxing and beautiful nursery for your little one...

Colour is such an important factor in the design process for a nursery.  It is so easy to focus on the obvious, pink for a girl, blue for a boy, yellow if you don’t know yet, or to slip in to bold, fun, playful primary colours.  Here at Butterfly Lane we disagree with this approach.  A nursery is not a room for visual stimulation but instead for calm, comfort and soothing, basically a room to encourage the little one to sleep as much as possible!  Crayola crayon colours can be introduced in playrooms, with toys and books, whereas a nursery is a sanctuary for relaxation and peaceful rest.  So in true Butterfly Lane style we recommend a neutral colour palette and lots of it!

Fit a thick carpet or rug on the nursery floor, not only will this cushion the knees of little crawlers but also creates warmth. Remember, your new family will spend lots of time on the floor during play times so invest in a quality rug or carpet that feels luxurious to the touch.

A great idea is to place seating by the window to allow natural light for reading and for cuddling your little one.  For late nights, early mornings and an afternoon snooze, nothing beats a comfy armchair and footstool for a cuddle session or a much needed nap for parent and baby.  Parents will be spending many hours in this special room, and an armchair and footstool might become a second bed and a place for special bonding moments, so the key things to think about are comfort, style and versatility.  Remember to add blankets, throws and pillows to create texture and warmth.  Also, this adorable little chair is a must, just so cute!

I think it’s rather limiting to focus your design on nursery furniture alone when furnishing the room.  Buying a standard set of drawers, bookcase and wardrobe not only looks chic and adult friendly but is also wise, as your baby will not be in nappies forever, so investing in quality furniture will be accommodating as your baby grows.
A bookcase or armoire is a must when furnishing a nursery.  A place to house all the babies books, soft toys and accessories, in a chic and organised way.

I can’t stress the importance of lighting enough.  As usual I massively love a gorgeous chandelier.  It adds an elegant and extravagant look to any room, in particular a nursery.  There’s no better space for such a fanciful lighting feature, the rainbows of colours and the twinkling effect from the sunlight hitting the crystals will delight babies, toddlers and grown-ups alike.  How divine.  There is no need to hang a mobile over the cot when you have a magnificent crystal version hanging from the ceiling.
Next, remember to install lamps for a soft and relaxing effect ideal for quiet moments and perfect to have when you are carrying out late night changes, as there is no need to wake yourself up any more than you need to!  A lamp next to the changer and next to your armchair would be ideal locations.

Enjoy creating the most magical of rooms to assist you in your new journey.  Let us know how you get on…X
