Reign Supreme: The Diamond Jubilee

Our gracious Queen is to celebrate 60 years on the throne on 5 June and the country is gearing up for one hell of a party.  From street parties to garden parties galore, village fetes and afternoon tea's, we are all feeling terribly British right now!  The main focus of the celebrations are in London town, and they are preparing to light up the city with spectacular events.  I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Thames Pageant, with over a thousands boats floating down the Thames, it’ll be one of the biggest flotillas ever assembled on the river, and it is sure to be an amazing sight!

Sketch of how the Thames Boat Pageant will look

The shops are bursting with commemorative merchandise and I’m already getting in on the game.  I have just bought this fabulous tin of biscuits from the British favourite M&S, I’m so loving the keep-sake tin!  I must admit that I am a sucker for a collectable tin, I have a lot!  My excuse is that you never know when you’ll need one…to transport cakes and biscuits…to use as storage, the options are endless.  Another purchase has been bought today, my favourite  elderflower cordial has had a very patriotic makeover in ode of the Jubilee celebrations.  Love!

Belvoir Patriotic Elderflower

Here at Butterfly Lane we are loving what Harvey Nichols are doing for the Jubilee celebrations.  Their tongue in cheek designs are so much fun, I think a purchase might well be on the horizion!  This fabulously fun lunch box (£14.95) is in homage to a former royal footsmans revelation that Her Majesty keeps her corn flakes in Tupperware.  So why not keep your sandwiches or corn flakes in royal realms too!

Celebrate the Queens Jubilee with the most beloved of British drinks...tea!  These whimsical tea bags are so much fun and a steal at £4.95!

Also, these themed biscuits by Biscuiteers are just the ticket so go with your English cuppa!  Prices start at £9.00.

Pimms is by far the obligatory British drink for a hot summer’s day of celebration.  Here’s how to get the perfect mix…

  • Mix one part Pimms
  • Three parts lemonade
  • Add sprigs of mint
  • Add slices of cucumber
  • Add orange segments
  • Add fresh strawberries
  • Serve over ice

Tally ho, get the Pimms ready, finger sandwiches prepared, hang the bunting and let’s have a jolly good time!

Trend: Escape To The Tropics

Summer days are looming and here at Butterfly Lane I am starting to think about yellow hues and sunshine pops of colour.  Tropical prints have been massive on the catwalk this season and this can be easily translated in to your home.

Tropical Fashion SS12
Why not add a simple cushion on to a plain chair to tap in to the trend.  This one from John Lewis is so beautiful and ticks all the right boxes.

As you are well aware by now Butterfly Lane is not massively keen on bright colours and heavily patterned pieces (everything in moderation!), we are all about simplicity here.  However, I think this trend can be diluted, and by using one signature colour you can embrace the summer vibe in your home.

It's all about yellow at the moment!  This colour palette has such a warm and friendly feel to it.  These rooms look just divine with a splash of this tropical and sun drenched shade.

Remember accessories are such a great way to dapple with a trend, and will transform your room instantly for minimal cost.  These tropical accessories will be available to buy online at the new Butterfly Lane boutique in a few weeks time, when our fantastic website is up and running!  However, if you just can't wait, then please contact us on customerservice@butterflylane.co.uk to make a purchase!

Pineapples are the symbol of 'welcome' in many cultures, so no home should be without!  We just love this mirrored pineapple lamp, and these pineapple bookends will house your cookery books with style and grace.  And finally, this palm lamp, and also matching palm candle holders are due to arrive any day now, and we are completely in love with them!  Pre-order now by emailing customerservice@butterflylane.co.uk.

Embrace a splash of tropical yellow and invest in some holiday inspired accessories to update your home in an instant.  After all summer is almost here!

Colour Pop: Think Pink With Feminine Hues

The sun is eventually shining after a rather wet Bank Holiday Weekend, and here at Butterfly Lane we are thinking about livening up a neutral colour palette with hints of fruity pinks and dusky tones.  A pop of pink looks amazing against soft greys...

Incorporate a colour splash by adding an accent chair in to your muted room as seen below or go all out with an entire pink theme and add in soft greens to create a romantic feel.

Pale pinks are just so pretty and delicate.  Add wistfully soft flower arrangements in to any room to give it feminine charm.

Think pink to give your home a summery, yet pretty lift...X

Travel: J'aime Paris!

It’s true, I love Paris.  A city of beautiful architecture, gorgeous food and super chic people.  I will even put up with the obligatory Parisian pomp for a weekend in this fabulous city.  I have visited Paris more times than I can remember for both business and pleasure, and each stay I have had a wonderful time.  After every visit I return home to Blighty with a distinct desire to become more ‘French like’ both in my outlook on life, with my fashion choices (throw me a Hermes scarf and Chanel 2:55 pronto!), and also with my desire to only eat teeny tiny food potions and to stay away from carbs completely!  How Parisian women stay looking so svelte and fabulous whilst there is a Laduree on most corners is beyond me.  It must come down to self-discipline, which I am definitely lacking when it comes to cakes, macaroons and anything in between.  However this desire to become more ‘French like’ usually disappears as soon as I return on to our fair shores and dive in for a Chinese take away and Kitkat Chunky on my route back home.  However it is lovely to dream…

Paris is definitely a city in which I can wander around for hours, resting frequently for a Café au Lait whilst watching the stylish folks glide by.  Bliss.  Here are Butterfly Lane top picks for a fabulous break in the city of lights…

Where to stay?

I most recently stayed at the uber cool and modern Philip Starck hotel, Mama Shelter.  As you would expect from a Starck design, it is extremely quirky.  Batman masks as lamps, stylish artwork hanging on the wall and installation art hanging from the ceilings.  Along with the funky interior design it is high tech too.  With Apple Macs everywhere, even on the ceiling in the bathrooms showing silent black and white movies!   It was so refreshing to stay in such cool boutique hotel without any pretentiousness; the staff are so friendly and welcoming.

The bar and restaurant inside the hotel is one of the best in Paris, so be aware you must book in advance to secure a table.  People travel from all around the city to eat there.  The cocktails are divine (great bar snacks too!) and I would suggest ordering the well presented fish and chip….just amazing!  Although the whole menu is completely tempting.  There is a great outdoor terrace too to enjoy on summer nights...

Villa D’Estrees, St Germain

Now if it’s location that you’re after then this stunning boutique hotel is for you.   This chic hotel lies on a cute Parisian cobbled street, walk outside the front door; turn to your right to see the Seine, and turn to your left to walk in to the hussle of stylish St Germain.   With decadent Parisian interiors, dark furniture and gold gilted walls, this small hotel is a feast for the eyes.

Tourist Spots:

I normally hate to stick to the usual tour guides and dislike heading to the obvious attractions (a trait that I have picked up from the boyfriend, he is a stickler for ‘going off the beaten track’ to say the least), but in Paris it is silly to miss out on anything.  Every corner you turn has a stunning building or piece of history, and I would have been devastated to miss out on my favourite two Parisian tourist hubs.

The Eiffle Tower.  No matter how many times I see the Eiffel Tower it still send tingles down my spine, as it is such an iconic landmark.  It looks especially beautiful when twinkling with thousands of fairy lights in the evening.  So why not grab a bottle of Prosecco, find a spot on the gardens and watch the light show!  Just magical.

Le Louvre, the home of Paris Fashion Week past and present, the Louvre is a spectacular sight, just stunning.  The glass pyramid that protrudes the courtyard may have Parisians divided, but I think it’s a wonderful contrast to the historic surroundings.  Remember to pop in to Le Café Marly, that overlooks the courtyard for brunch, it is particularly special.

The two afore mentioned tourists spots are unmissable but Butterfly Lane has to suggest the following touristy visits as well:

A walk down the Seine looking at the street art whilst eating baguettes

Ice cream at Isle de Cite

Shopping in Le Murat

All a must!

Butterfly Lane’s favourite part of town:

This might well be a obvious choice but I just love St Germain.  The cobbled streets, chic shops, Cafe Flore, need I go on?  In my 'fashion buyer' days this was the area where all the fashion houses head offices were, Herve Ledger, BCBG, Paul Smith, so this area has fashion running through it.  Head there for a stylish day out.

Shopping:

Pop in to Flamant for some beautiful home accessories, their products are simple, chic, and without any fuss.  We love!

We love this shop!  Full of amazing kitchen ware, dining sets, and decorative accessories, it screams French chic.  A real must when you are in the city.

Colette

For top-notch fashion you must pop in to Colette.  The price tags are high but it’s just lovely to walk around this stunning boutique and admire the creations.  From clothing to books, make-up and so much more, Colette is the premier shop for fashion design in Paris.  They are always looking to push the next best thing, it’s super hip and you can find some really unusual pieces.

Finish your busy day of shopping and sight seeing with some amazing food and cocktails…

Restaurants

Le Chateaubriand, 129 Avenue Parmentier

This restaurant was voted in the top ten in the world in 2011, so firstly, you must book in advance.  The boyfriend booked a table weeks in advance and we arrived excited to eat the famous 'deconstructed' cuisine.  Unfortunately, when we arrived there was a mix-up, something to do with a Mr Davies in New York and my very own Mr Davies, our table had gone!  I must say that the staff were amazing (they must have seen the disappointment slapped across our faces), so we sat in the buzzing bar next door and devoured a bottle of vin, until they could squeeze us in.

It was so worth our wait, we opted for the tasting menu, nine courses of amazing food, along with a drink to match every course.  We were there a long time, and all-in-all it was fabulously decadent!  The self-taught Basque chef, Inaki Aizpitarte, runs the stylish restaurant with the adventurous menu.  The restaurant is all about the food, no fancy soft furnishings, wooden tables are all you're getting.  Along with amazing food and great service, that's what Le Chateaubriand is all about.  No pomp or ceremony on the menu!  I seriously recommend this restaurant and you might just be able to do a bit of celeb spotting too!

Pershing Hall is one of Paris’s hippest hotels, with a fashionable restaurant, full of fashionable diners. Stood swankily in the centre of the Golden Triangle, it makes powerful first impression. You enter through a dramatic colour-changing tunnel leading to a luxurious lobby dominated by an amazing floor-to-ceiling garden, which really makes this restaurant stand out. Eat simple gourmet dishes or in the afternoon the patio becomes a place for afternoon tea, coffee and decadent desserts. Come nightfall, the cosy bar buzzes with ubercoolness.  I suggest that after dinner; stretch your legs and wander down the street for cocktails at the Plaza, with the Eiffle Tower twinkling in the background.   What a night!

About: Butterfly Lane

This week Butterfly Lane was featured in a magazine interview for Hatch'd, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share with you, our lovely readers, a bit more about Butterfly Lane Interiors.  Here are the questions and answers, I hope you enjoy...

Tell us a bit about Butterfly Lane and how you got started?

Butterfly Lane is dedicated to making your home beautiful.  I am a blogger, documenting all of my interior design inspirations whilst I renovate my Georgian home.  However, I’m so excited that our online homeware boutique will be launching this summer, we have so many exciting brands on board and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.  We will also offer interior design consultations, At Home Parties where we bring the shop to the customers’ home and a bespoke gift list service perfect for weddings.

What brought you to the countryside and do you miss anything about city life?

I always dreamt about country living, the Aga in the kitchen, the fire blazing in the sitting room, picking herbs from the garden, idealistic I know!  My boyfriend and I wanted to root ourselves somewhere, he lives and works in London and I worked in Nottingham so we eventually settled on rural life, somewhere for him to escape to at the weekends for some down time and me to embrace country living full time!

I do miss elements of city living, mainly the fashion, however I am a massive internet shopping fan so I know that I can get whatever I want at a click of a button!  If all else fails, London is just a train journey away…

Why do you think it's important to be comfortable in your surroundings?

Your home is where you live, entertain and most importantly relax, so it should be the place you feel most comfortable.  You are surrounded by all your belongings and memories and therefore should be a place that expresses who you are the most.

How would you describe your style and who are your influences?

My style is extremely classic, but with a design twist.  I love elegant and simple interiors, nothing too fussy.  Give me a neutral colour palette, sparkling glassware, luxurious fabrics with quirky accessories and I’m in heaven!  My mum is a massive influence to me, she has a knack of making everything look beautiful.

If you could design for a client, dead or alive, who would it be?

I would have loved to have designed a room for Grace Kelly.  She embodies elegance, timeless classic beauty and luxury.  Everything Butterfly Lane stands for.

What are the most important things to consider when renovating a property?

Have a realistic time scale!  When we got the keys to our house I was determined to get everything completed within six months, and we are now six months down the line and we still have so much to do!  I also think it’s important to realise that good tradesman are hard to find and if they are good you will have to wait a while for them to start work.  I always think alarm bells should ring when a tradesman says he can start the next day!

What are the most effective ways to feel 'at home' in rented accommodation?

Accessorise!  The ‘visual merchandising’ part of any interior design project is the most exciting in my opinion.  Personalise your space with things that you love, if you can’t change the paint colour on the walls, hang a gorgeous mirror or a painting.  Hate the flooring, throw down a fabulous rug!

What are your tips for 'sprucing up' on a budget?

I think a lick of paint on the walls works wonders for any room and can transform the feel of it instantly.  It doesn’t cost the earth and as a bonus you get that freshly painted smell that is just divine!  You can also pick up great accessories on the high street and in supermarkets for not a lot of money that can update any room.   Use a simple vase with hand picked flowers from the garden, this can uplift an old sideboard or table in an instant.

How do you design a room that is 'timeless' and what are the easiest ways to keep a room up-to-date?

A timeless room can be created by keeping things simple and by not buying in to seasonal trends in a big way, as these will often look dated a year down the line.  I like to buy classic pieces of furniture and then add ‘fashion’ accessories to modernise the space.  I have just bought a stag head door hook which is very ‘in vogue’ at the moment and will give my room a stylish look, but it was not ridiculously expensive so I won’t mind taking it down in a few months time when the trend passes by.

I like to keep colour schemes classic too, I’m a massive fan of the Farrow & Ball paint range and also Kelly Hoppen does a great neutral based range.  You can then make the room up-to-date by buying small accents of a trend, add in cushions, vases and accessories to update the room and make it look super stylish.

Can you think of any design choices that you would consider a 'faux pas' or 'cliche' and would avoid?

I hate the idea of a top to toe look taken directly from a catalogue or specific brand, it lacks a bit of imagination!  I think the idea of great design is not to copy a look entirely but to take inspiration from different elements of the design and personalise it.  It might be the easy option but in my opinion it’s unrealistic to think you’ll find the perfect pieces for your home immediately, it can take months or even years of searching to stumble upon the ‘perfect’ piece of furniture, painting or accessories.  Be patient!

How has social media changed the way you approach your business?

The main part of my business at the moment is virtual so social media is an incredible resource to have.  Not only for business-to-business contacts and PR but also to understand my customer.  I find it amazing that a blog I write at my kitchen table is read by people in Russia, Portugal and Hong Kong and it’s all down to the power of social media. Therefore, a daily part of my job is to update my Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest accounts, something that would have been unheard of a few years a go in business.  But people want instant information and new ideas now, customers don’t want to wait anymore for anything!  It’s a fast moving world we live in.

What do you love and hate about blogging?

I can honestly say there isn’t one thing I hate about blogging, I absolutely love it!  However, I am slightly obsessed about looking at the statistics, where people are viewing the blog from, their comments and feedback, how many people have looked at the blog this week etc.  I have over 4000 readers now from all over the world, and I find that very exciting!

What are your tips for those attempting a new start-up?

Just go for it!  I have wanted my own business ever since I graduated university and finally this year I drastically quit my job from a high end fashion label and embarked on this new path.  It is extremely scary, but massively exciting, everyday is different and creative.

Be passionate about your business and know every finer detail about it, leave nothing to chance.  You are the one who has got to back it 100% and drive it forward in the right direction.

Finally my sensible tip is that it’s so important to have a tight business plan in place and that your figures are accurate.  Do a profit and loss analysis and it’ll give you realistic expectations of what to work towards.

What have been the most exciting moments of your career so far and what are your goals for the future?

I still think that it is to come with Butterfly Lane and the launch of the online boutique.  I really want to create the Butterfly Lane brand in to something special and that people love.
